Mark Twain’s classic tale comes to life when the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs’ Youth Players present “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” at the Center for Performing Arts Bonita Springs November 13-15, 2015. Young Tom Sawyer, played by twelve-year-old Elizabeth Fleetham, leads a cast of 32 local actors and the audience on a classic adventure set in St. Petersburg, Missouri in the late 1840’s.

“’The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ is such a great play because everyone can see themselves in the characters,” says Craig Price Theater Director of the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs. “Our actors had the opportunity to learn so much about their selves through the process of rehearsing and we hope the audience has that same experience.”
Mark Twain based “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” on his own childhood, drawing from memories of growing up in the 1800s. In his preface to the novel, Twain states that “most of the adventures recorded in this book really occurred,” and the character of Tom sawyer was based on “a combination of three boys whom I knew.”

Children who lived along the Mississipi in the 1840’s enjoyed a slow, quiet life that could be enlivened by the imagination and antics of a young boy. In this adventure that boy is Tom Sawyer who leads himself, Joe Harper (Lindsey Stiles), Huck (Tony Garrido-Giambo), and, Becky Thatcher (Peyton McManus) into increasingly dangerous situations. He also finds himself in predicaments in which he must put his concern for others above his concern for himself, such as when he takes Becky’s punishment and when he testifies at Injun Joe’s (Scott Bishaw) trial. As Tom begins to take initiative to help others instead of himself, he shows his increasing maturity, competence, and moral integrity.

Tom Sawyer Group Old TimeyAll the classic moments, are here; the fence painting, showing off for Becky, dodging the schoolmaster, the tooth-pulling, Tom teasing Sid, and pretending to be sick in an attempt to stay home from school and many more. Despite the constant efforts of his long-suffering Aunt Polly (Sabine Stiles), Tom would rather play hooky and spend time with that “dreadful boy” Huckleberry Finn. One night when Tom sneaks out, he and Huck are the witnesses to a murder in the graveyard. Terrified of the killer, Injun Joe, the two boys have to face their fears and decide to do the right thing, even when it puts them in danger.
Directed by Craig Price, CFABS’ Youth Players have created a raft to take you back in time to remember and laugh along with the characters and perhaps even your own memories of growing up.
