A REFRESHING OPTION TO THE SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER The Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs’ Summer Film Schedule

Guests Enjoy Performance_Grand Opening Moe Auditorium & Film Center

It’s summer blockbuster season and movie theaters are packed with droves of fans willing to brave long lines to watch the latest large budget, star packed film extravaganza. I will be the first to admit that I have been waiting 13 years to see this summer’s blockbuster “Finding Dory,” the follow up to Pixar’s 2003 release “Finding Nemo.” However, once I’ve seen Dory film offerings become limited, as summer blockbusters stay longer in theaters so movie studios can recoup their $100,000,000 plus investments.

Some of the greatest films of all time would never have made the summer blockbuster cut including “Citizen Kane (1941)” or “It’s A Wonderful Life (1946),” which barely made bank when they were released. The Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs has put together a line up of films for their summer Monday night “Films for Film Lovers Series,” that may have missed the box office blockbuster cut, but should be on every film fans must see list.

Summer films include selections of the best of foreign and independent films, shown Monday nights at 7:00pm at the newly renovated Moe Auditorium & Film Center at the Center for Performing Arts Bonita Springs. The 200-seat auditorium includes a giant screen; a state of the art projection system and the all-important refreshments that include freshly popped popcorn, snacks, beer, wine and mixed drinks that you can enjoy in the theater as you watch a great film.

On Friday, June 10, 2016; 6:00-8:00pm the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs (CFABS) invites everyone to join them at their Elements of Abstraction Exhibition Opening Reception. The first in CFABS’ monthly summer series of juried exhibitions, Elements of Abstraction showcases artwork from artists working in a variety of media with over 100 pieces of abstract representations. CFABS’ exhibition openings are a local favorite, offering residents the opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow art lovers and local artists while enjoying hors d’ oeuvres, wine and music.

“Using of the elements and principles of design, artists were challenged to create a visual language that communicates ideas and emotions,” says Ehren Gerhard, Shows and Exhibitions Director of the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs. “This approach to visual art is always a great exercise for both the artist and viewer.”

The Elements of Abstraction Exhibition, which remains on display through June 23, offers visitors an opportunity to take a step out of reality and jump into a world where line, shape, texture and color influence emotions in unexpected ways. Abstract art can have a transformative effect on the viewer and artist alike. One local artist whose life and art has been transformed by the medium is Bonita Springs resident and emerging artist Betsy D’ Jamoos who has two striking acrylic pieces “Bravely Apart,” and “Making Space,” included in this exhibition.

“My artistic process began as a child when I was told she had no artistic talent by a teacher,” says D’Jamoos. “It took 40 years to conquer the voice in my head that said I cannot paint or draw.”

Betsy DJamoos Theresa Girard Workshop

Following a successful career in consulting and government policy, D’Jamoos’ picked up a paintbrush for the first time in 2014 when attending a workshop by artist Theresa Girard at CFABS. Proving its never too late to follow your creative calling D’Jamoos art was chosen this year as one of only 16 artists from across the State included in the Baker Museum’s Florida Contemporary Exhibition. D’Jamoos’ art was also shown at the Center for the Arts of Bonita Springs (CFABS) 26th Annual Members Juried Exhibition and CFAB’s 2016 “Surf and Turf” exhibition and hangs in private collections in Southwest Florida.

LYRICAL LAUGHS – SINGPROV AT IMPROV TONIGHT Saturday, June 4, 8:00pm at the Center for Performing Arts Bonita Springs

BonitaBanner_SINGPROV-PAGE-1

By Patrice Shields

What do you get when you cross a therapist, a lawyer, and a theater director with a keyboardist and some random audience suggestions? You get “Singprov,” a show that blends musical improv games and songs into a toe-tapping, belly laughing night of fun. Improv master and CFABS’ Theater Director Craig Price and his troupe “You’ll See How It Goes,” bring Singprov to the stage at the Center for Performing Arts Bonita Springs on Saturday, June 4, 8:00pm.

Led by the driving force behind Southwest Florida’s Improv comedy movement, Second City and Improv Olympic trained veteran Craig Price, the “Improv Tonight” show has grown from a sparsely attended drop-in open mic night in 2011 to a monthly show that fills CFABS’ Moe Auditorium and Film Center with laughter the first Saturday of each month. The troupe increases in size during season and includes year round performers Craig Price, Leigh Shein, Margot Escott, Steve Cobb, Marion Horgan and Bill Owens, with pianist Francis Briggs.

“Singprov brings improv to a whole new level,” says Craig Price. “Musical Improv takes all of the aspects of live improvisational comedy and puts it to music. Not only do we have to think fast on our feet, we have to sing fast on them too.”

Audience members offer suggestions for song titles and lyrics that the players must incorporate into a song on the spot. The results include improvised songs about “roadkill” and “keeping it kosher,” with refrains the entire audience can sing along to in perfect harmony – sometimes.

In addition to improv shows, CFABS’ offers an extensive roster of year round theater and improv classes for adults and children. Members of “You’ll See How It Goes” teach classes suitable for beginners through advanced students that include “Improv I,” “Stress Management Through Improv Comedy,” “Improv 2,” and “Advanced Improv Training.” Summer Camp classes that run June 8-August 18 offer improv fun for ages 4-18.

Would you like to take an improv class for free? Join the Centers for the Arts for the first time as an individual member receive a free 4-, 5-, or 6- week class, or join for the first time as a family member receive a free 4-, 5-, or 6- week class and two free tickets to a Live! Performance, including “Improv Tonight.” The Centers for the Arts offers this benefit for first time members and it is for a limited time only. The class and performance must be used before December 31, 2016.

CFABS’ also offers a family and youth friendly improv show at 4pm the first Saturday of each month called “Improv Café.” The show features young professional improv players “Mission Improvable,” trained through CFABS’ youth improv classes.

Tickets for “Improv Tonight” are $12 for Members of the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs, $15 for non-members and $17 at the door for all. Tickets for “Improv Café” are $6 for youth and $10 for adults. Tickets can be purchased on-line at http://www.artcenterbonita.org or by calling the Center for the Arts at 239-495-8989.
